Dear students, staff, parents, alumni and friends of St. Cyprian’s Boys’ School, it is with immense pride and joy that we look back on sixty five years of this beloved school. This milestone is not just a testament to the longevity of our school, but also to the dedication, hard work, and love that has been poured into SCBS by generations of students, teachers, and the entire community.
For 65 years, our school has been a place of learning, growth, and inspiration. We have nurtured young minds, fostered creativity, and instilled values that our students carry with them long after they leave our halls. This is an opportunity to reflect on the rich history that has shaped us and to look forward to the bright future that lies ahead.
As we reflect today, we honor the visionary, Canon Hazelwood, who founded our school, the educators who have shaped our students, and the many individuals who have contributed to making St.Cyprian’s Boys’ School the welcoming place it is today.
We cannot celebrate this milestone without honouring the chairman, Patricia Small, for her unwavering faith in this school. Although she was a part of the school from 1977, she took over the helm from 1990 on the passing of our founder. Left with tough decisions, she made the brave decision to forge ahead with a mortgage for the school when others would have closed the institution. She took on the challenge of finding a place for the school to call home, and today, we sit proudly at our location in Brittons Cross Road. Year after year, the building continues to be restored and improved.
With the unending support of her entire family, Mrs. Small engaged them all to fill in when the school could not afford to pay for these positions: Business manager, Technology manager, Operations manager and so on. Her husband Tyrone Small, who worked behind the scenes, wore many of those hats. The man with no title but as dedicated as anyone to see the success of this school. From spreadsheets, programmes, computer classes, payroll and training, he got the job done. He leveraged his sons, Brian and Barry Small, who had the expertise in computer sciences and programming, to fulfill many needs of the school. You can say it was a family affair. The countless hours that they have put into the management of this school are understated. From painting, tiling and ground maintenance, Mr. Tyrone Small could be seen performing these chores. Today, the school sports is named in his honour, as he started sports day and provided many of the trophies handed out to students. He engaged the likes of Sir Clive LLoyd, a legendary Caribbean Cricketer and family friend, to stop in at the school whenever he is on the island to speak to our students about cricket. We sincerely could not have made such strides without the Small family. They were and still remain the heart and soul of our school.
We, at St. Cyprian’s, continue to send off young men from this school who are ready to conquer the world. We encourage brotherhood and respect, honesty and integrity. We do not only teach the required curriculum but we teach life lessons; after all, parents entrust their sons from three years old up to age eleven with us, so no matter what secondary school they go to next, we have helped in many ways to shape their future by laying a solid foundation.
We won't only look back but we will also continue to look ahead and celebrate our ongoing journey. We continue to grow, and yes, we have filled those positions so we are deeply thankful for our progress. We continue to strive for excellence in everything we do. Our commitment to providing the best possible education for our students remains as strong as day one if not more as we continue to meet societal needs.
Special thanks to the Board of Management, our current and former principals, staff and students, whose contributions have helped to build the legacy we celebrate on this anniversary.
We will continue to stay humble and be reminded of the power of community, the importance of education, and the enduring spirit of St. Cyprian’s Boys’ School.
Here’s to 65 years of memories, achievements, and successes and to many more years to come!
Thank you for being part of our journey. “Sure and Steady Must Succeed”.
