Canon Gordon Hazlewood came to Barbados from St. Vincent in 1934 as Senior Curate of St. Michael's Cathedral, becoming the Dean there in 1939. He served in that capacity for some 21 years. During that period, the Cathedral parish included the diocese of All Souls and St. Cyprian's churches.
It was therefore not surprising that when the building adjacent to St. Cyprian's Church became vacant, he took the initiative to put it to good use by starting a school for boys.
The Canon founded St. Cyprian's Preparatory Boys' School in 1959 in Belleville, St Michael. The school later moved to Brittons Hill in 1987. The Canon took an active role in the school education and conducted a Religious education period with the boys every Wednesday morning.
On October 18, 1989, the school’s chapel was consecrated by The Right Reverend Drexel Gomez and this was a “Zenith moment” for The Canon's association with the school.
Sadly, Canon Hazelwood passed away in 1990. However, The Canon’s name is synonymous with St. Cyprian's. In fact, the new chapel was named in his honour and bears his portrait which was done by medical practitioner, Mr. Andrew Sears, one of the numerous parents who is proud to be associated with this outstanding school.
